St. Roch/Rocco/Rock/Rollox was a French noble who lived in the early 14th century. Early on he developed a sympathy for the poor and sick. He became a mendicant pilgrim (lived off of the support of others by begging). He encountered an area afflicted by the plague, and while ministering to them he became sick himself. He went off into the forest to die, but he was befriended by a dog who brought him stolen food and Roch recovered. When he returned to his home town he was arrested for being a spy. He didn't tell any one of his noble birth and died after five years in prison.
