St. William of York (d.1154) holy medal, memorial is June 8th.

This medal just says St. William, and there are several, but this listing is going to assume that this is a medal for St. William of York...

And what a dramatic life he lived! He was related to King William of England. Treasurer of the church in York. Was chaplain to King Stephen. In 1140 he became the Archbishop of York, and there is the drama. The Cistercians didn't like him and challenged his selection as archbishop and accused him of all sorts of crimes. The Vatican and Pope Innocent cleared him of all charges, but a few years later the charges came back under Pope Eugene III, a Cistercian. Riots and arson ensued, and William retired and became a monk. The next pope, Anastasius IV, again ordained him as archbishop of York a few years later, and then one month later William died, some say it was poisoning, others say it was fever. CatholicSaints.Info » Blog Archive » Saint William of York
