St. Eugene de Mazenod (1782-1861) holy medal
- French Catholic saint, memorial is May 21st.
- patron of dysfunctional families, founder of Oblates of Mary Immaculate
He had a chaotic family life as a child. They had to flee France in 1790 to escape the French Revolution. He spent 11 years in Italy, and he was exposed to the wild and worldly life among rich, young Italian nobles in Palermo while also being educated by a priest in Venice. He eventually returned to France and his parents divorced. The conflicting lives he lived in Palermo and Venice, created an internal conflict, but finally God won his heart and he entered the seminary at age 29. He became a parish priest and worked among the poor, sick and prisoners. Eventually he founded a new congregation, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and became a busy bishop.
